Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners (CPI-W)
The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners (CPI-W) is an economic indicator published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban wage earners and clerical workers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.
Under the dodd-frank-act, the CPI-W is mandated for use in annually adjusting certain dollar thresholds within federal consumer financial protection regulations. Specifically, for Truth in Lending Act (TILA) and Regulation Z, the CPI-W is used to adjust:
- The dollar threshold for exempt consumer credit transactions.
- The thresholds for total points and fees for 12 CFR 1026 43 Refinancing Non Standard Mortgagess.
These annual adjustments ensure that the regulatory thresholds keep pace with inflation and economic changes.
