Census Bureau
The Census Bureau is a principal agency of the U.S. Federal Statistical System, responsible for producing data about the American people and economy. Its primary mission is to serve as the leading source of quality data about the nation's people and economy.
In the context of mortgage regulations, the Census Bureau's definitions are used to determine geographic classifications. Specifically, it defines "urban areas," which in turn helps to identify rural areas for the purpose of special regulatory provisions for small creditors.
